The AustralAsian Specialty Coffee Association (AASCA) is the Australian specialty coffee industry’s voice and representative both here in Australia and overseas. AASCA is an organisation run by volunteers across Australia who currently work within the specialty coffee industry and help organise and run the Australian Barista Championships and satellite competitions at state level. Winners of these national championships are crowned Australian Barista Champion or Australian Latte Art Champion and are then sent to the World championships held by the World Coffee Events and World Barista Championships (WBC).
In May 2013, Melbourne was the host city for the World Barista Championships and World Brewers Cup (WBrC). The event was held in conjunction with the Melbourne International Coffee Expo and let me tell you, the trade show was HUGE. This year our World Barista Champion is Pete Licata, a veteran barista competitor from USA. USA was able to complete the double with Erin McCarthy taking out WBrC. St ALi’s own Matt Perger, a two time Australian barista champion placed an agonisingly close second to Pete Licata with an interesting routine which revolved around using the espresso machine as a filter coffee brewer and producing espresso with filter coffee grinders.
Australia always does extremely well on the world stage with Aussie representatives usually making finals and/or podium finish. Over the years, we have produced 2 World Latte Art Champions and 1 World Barista Champion.
