Getting a barista job with no experience can be extremely difficult, but not impossible. In this post, I will share with you some tips that will help you find your first barista job with no experience.
Barista job…2 years experience required
Said pretty much every barista job ad ever in Melbourne. If you look on Facebook groups such as Melbourne Barista Union, or industry job boards like Barista Seeker, every barista job ad is virtually made from the same template:
XYZ Cafe seeks barista with 2 years experience
It can be pretty demoralising when no one will even look at you because you have no experience as a barista. Don’t despair, read on.
Where do I look for a barista job with no experience?
Let’s face it, when every job ad requires you to have a minimum of 2 years experience as a barista, it is highly unlikely you’re going to land a specialty cafe role as your first barista job.
When you want to find a barista job with no experience, I’d recommend looking at places that don’t have a super expensive espresso bar setup. There are plenty of family run cafes around in the suburbs and shopping centres where coffee isn’t their primary focus.
Coffee chains are also a solid bet. When I started my coffee career 14 years ago, I worked for a big franchise in a shopping centre. This gave me the opportunity to fine tune my basic coffee making skills, learn about customer service and how to manage my workflow. Granted it wasn’t the best coffee in the world, but it was a start. I used this opportunity to level myself up.
Ask your friends and family
You probably already have a friend or a friend of a friend that already works in a cafe. Reach out and ask them whether or not their cafe is looking for anyone for the front of house. Your goal is to just get your foot in the door, even if it is starting out on the floor.
Don’t underestimate the power of networking. A study has shown that 85% of jobs are filled by networking.
The cafe all rounder
The cafe all rounder position is an important role in any cafe. This is the jack of all trades, master of none. The cafe all rounder is there to fill in any gaps that need filling. One day you might be working on sandwiches, the next you might be on the register taking orders.
This role is a fantastic opportunity to start your coffee making career as a barista with no experience. There will come a day where the barista needs help on the machine because they’re getting slammed or the barista calls in sick. This is your time to shine!
While you’re at the job, ask the barista if it’s okay to make your own coffee and show the cafe you have basic coffee making skills. Also, bug the barista to teach you and show you new things.
I hope this helps you find a barista job with no experience.
