So maybe you’ve toyed with the idea of becoming a barista one day but are not quite sure if it’s the right choice for you, here are 5 reasons why you should become a barista.
Free unlimited coffee
I mean who doesn’t like free AND unlimited? Seriously, most cafes will allow you to drink as much coffee as you can handle.
Usually when dialing-in coffees in the morning, tasting all the drinks is not only ritualistic but part of the job. Don’t be surprised if you’ve tasted more than 5 coffees before 9 am!
Being a barista and tasting drinks all day for quality control can be overwhelming for people who aren’t used to consuming so much caffeine, so here’s a pro tip, sip a small amount, swish it around the palate and then discretely spit it out into a spittoon/paper cup and discard.
Baristas get paid more than $26 per hour
Did you know the minimum award wage for an experienced barista is more than $26 per hour in Australia?
That’s absolutely phenomenal pay compared to baristas overseas who often have to rely on tips for a living wage.
Because being a barista isn’t a 9-5 job, you’re free to pick and choose the hours you want to work allowing you to juggle other commitments like study, another part-time job and family. This means if you want to take Fridays off, you totally can!
That said, being a barista often means early starts, but that also means you get to clock off earlier. This leaves time in the afternoon to run errands like going to the post office to pick up that package you’ve been waiting for all week.
Being a barista opens many doors
Being a barista in Australia is seen as a valid career choice and is no longer seen as something you just do during school to get by. Established baristas often end up in different parts of the coffee industry including coffee roasting and coffee training.
If you want to open your own cafe, you now have the necessary skills to do that without having to feel like you’re jumping into the deep end. Working as a barista will teach you the systems and processes required to run a successful cafe. I’ve seen plenty of friends venture from being awesome baristas to amazing business owners in just a few short years.
Become a morning person
If you struggle to get out of bed every morning, becoming a barista can turn you into a morning person. The early starts will be hard to begin with, but before you know it, you’ve already become a morning person. Rising out of bed early will be easy!
